The coronavirus pandemic has arguably disrupted the hospitality sector more than almost any other, leaving it financially devastated and with a very uncertain future for many of those employed in the trade. As an example, it has been predicted that more than 30,000 pubs, bars and restaurants may remain permanently closed.
“Being the hub of the local community for over 35 years, the thought of losing your business, livelihood and for many your home and friends, was almost impossible to comprehend,” says Nick Landlord of The Jolly Coopers.
“We closed 5 days earlier than the Government deadline in March as we had great concerns about exposing our staff and clientele to the virus. At that time there was no information regarding what an effective regime would be to use against Covid-19.”
“As part of the government’s third phase of lockdown easing, we began making plans for reopening on 4th July. Our challenges were not only regulating social distancing but also the fact our customers would be in contact with objects, glasses, plates cutlery etc. We required a firm plan of action and the priority was safety first.”
“Jane and I took it one step at a time to be certain we were following all the government ‘Covid-19 secure’ guidelines relating to our size and style of business. We implemented sanitation stations inside the pub door & restaurant, before the toilet area and inside the toilets. We have a registration station, so we know who has been in the pub for track and trace purposes. We use Zoflora disinfectant to clean down all surfaces and have had staff training in how to keep safe, for them and the customers. We have removed 60% of our seating and have a “no barflies” policy where only the staff are allowed to approach the bar so it is table service throughout, we have offered to supply all of the staff with PPE should they want it. We have also said if they do not feel safe to return to work then we will respect their decision.”

“We believe it has also given more confidence to our staff and customers, by illustrating that we are doing the very best we can in these unprecedented times. I do have to say it is quiet and unobtrusive, and more often than not we are the ones to point it out to everyone, so for its size, the work it does is very impressive.”
“So far, the customer feedback on our safety measures has been very positive. We have put our COVID safety code of conduct on our website, on Facebook and on twitter and we have posters around the pub with it on and it has been very well received.”
“Lockdown was an unusual time for us all but for a business that has community and social interaction at the heart of its operations, it was doubly challenging.
“We are happy to be back at work and I think both staff and locals are all genuinely pleased with the measures we have put in place to protect everyone as best we can.”
